Choose Your Passion:

The MEd in Reading offers two emphases of study to advance your career.

  • Reading Instruction: This emphasis is designed for educators who are interested in strengthening their understanding of the field of reading in order to become experts on reading in their classrooms.
  • Reading Specialist: This emphasis is designed for educators who may want to move out of the classroom into specialized teaching of reading, to work as a literacy coach, or to move into central office director positions. This emphasis leads to a Virginia licensure endorsement as a reading specialist, with passage of the Reading for Virginia Educators Assessment.

When I wanted to further my education and become a reading specialist, Lynchburg was the only choice. In the two years it took me to get my master’s in reading, my eyes were opened to what being a reading teacher really meant and that I’m capable of so much more.
